Artist Reception & Talk

Pentimenti Gallery has great pleasure in bringing you DONALD MARTINY: New Paintings. This is the artist first solo exhibition with the gallery.
For Donald Martiny, gesture is a constant point of inquiry, as is his relationship with the traditions of painting. A long time oil painter, concepts like figure / ground and the square or rectangular surfaces in which painting usually takes place on are concerns that he addresses.
Each piece relates to gesture in different ways, some composed of a single act, and others built on a cluster of tight strokes. The attention to mark making, intense color, and scale are at the forefront here, their voices are loud and clear.
Leaving the traditional support of the canvas behind, his paintings are speaking about “the act of painting”. By isolating the brushstroke, he shifts the spotlight to make their movement front and center. Intentionally altering the format of the work also removes the art historical reference of paintings as a window, or a doorway. We, the viewers find them in direct conversation with the architecture of the space, ourselves, and the resulting relationships we form inside the space in which they are located.
Each painting possesses a great deal of activity, a humanity that Donald is in tune with. “I want to put the human experience into it. In a sense they are self portraits, a direct reflection of my physicality at a specific time”. Created on the floor as Donald moves around them, employing the use of brushes, his hands and even brooms. Donald is able to push and pull the material, using the whole of his body at the moment of their creation.
Using dispersed pigments and polymer, with the occasional addition of micro bubbles to lighten their physical weight, the materials he uses speak to painting in an age of technological Innovation. Donald’s work raises an awareness of what it is to be a painting, and the value of one against the whole. They also challenge us to consider how one interacts with their surroundings, and what it means to “move”.
